True greatness comes from inside, although it is often recognizable from the outside. As could be said of the Big Ingenieur, whose 45.5-millimetre case immediately impresses. While the Ingenieur Automatic of 2005 "only" needed a 42.5-millimetre case for its IWC-manufactured 80110 calibre, the large 51112 calibre found in the Big Ingenieur, with its Pellaton winding system and seven-day power reserve, simply needs more room. And since not everyone works in high-energy environments surrounded by strong magnetic fields, the designers did away with the soft iron inner case in favour of a sapphire glass back cover. This modification provides an unimpeded view of the fascinating movement, significantly reduces the height of the case and makes the watch much more comfortable in use. Both the case and the dial immediately stamp the watch as an Ingenieur, although it should be noted that the clearly legible date display is at 6 o'clock while the seven-day power reserve display, with a red indication for the last day, is at 3. A reliable watch for use every day - even the toughest of them.
